Zion School Board made it right and unanimously approved the naming of Varsity Softball Diamond 1 after Legendary Varsity Softball Head Coach Greg Blakey. “Having a diamond named after me is a very humbling experience,” Coach Blakey said. “A lot of people worked very hard for this and I appreciate all of their hard work.     By BLAKE FAITH The Village Board unanimously approved Resolution 2024-14, a Resolution Authorizing the Adoption of the Macon County Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan. Corey McKenzie, Village Treasurer, presented the FY 2023 Motor Fuel Tax Compliance Report. There were no findings, and the Village was compliant with all MFT and IDOT regulations regarding Motor Fuel Tax Funds.

    By Blake Faith The Mt. Zion football team bounced back from its loss against Troy and defeated Salem 34-14. Keller Stocks threw five touchdowns, connecting to Jacob Harvey for four of them. Down 14-7 in the second quarter, Stocks dropped back and threw an over the top-ball to Harvey who completed the 43-yard touchdown pass. Gabe Shumaker nailed the extra point and tied the game 14-14 for the Braves. The Braves took the leader later in the quarter and never gave it back.

    By Blake Faith The Mt. Zion Boys soccer team went 2-2 this week picking up wins against Taylorville and Eisenhower/MacArthur and losing to Effingham and Champaign Central. Against the Decatur co-op, the Braves struck first when Cruz Stephenson headed the ball into the back of the net to give the Braves a 1-0 lead. Oliver Coleman, Jacob Harmison, Donavan Martin and Will Grohne added four more individual goals that gave the Braves a 5-0 halftime lead.

    Kendall Smith makes a serve in a 2-1 loss to Unity Christian. By BLAKE FAITH Staff Writer The Mt. Zion Volleyball team went 3-4 last week picking up all three wins in the Olney Classic. Against Unity Christian, in the first set the Braves went down early 11-4. Ella Fink made a block to cut the Lions’ lead to 11-5. Ty Ball made an attack to make the score 13-6. Kendall Smith made back to back kills and Fink nailed back to back aces to cut the Lions’ lead to 14-10.
