For the past few years, whenever Alex Maitre found somebody on the street who wanted a shelter bed, he had to make a phone call. Or five. Maitre would leave voicemails and send emails. He might not hear back for hours. Then in May, he was given access to a new app. “This is a quantum leap,” Maitre, a case manager with the homelessness services organization Brother Benno’s, said in an interview.

On a Tuesday morning in April, a pair of San Diego police officers walked toward the downtown public library. Ahead of them was a bearded man who looked like he’d spent the night outside. “Good morning,” one officer said. “I’m moving,” the man responded. San Diego’s camping ban, along with similar laws that discourage sleeping on sidewalks, loom large in the public consciousness.

I was swimming at my athletic club the other day when I saw a woman on the second floor running on a treadmill and watching CNN. I always think that’s a weird thing to do. Like, would that make you less stressed or more stressed? I mean, what fun is running on a treadmill? All that pounding on your knee joints. And for what? And then you’re watching TV? That can’t be good for your mental health. Plus, it’s good mental health to be on a team.
