    David Ishay once protected Israel with his rifle. Now he protects the world with his Torah. Born a secular Jew, he found God while guarding army bases in northern Israel ten years ago. One day, he claims, a higher power warned him that the base was going to be attacked. His commanding officer in the Israeli army dismissed his warnings — but when the base was burgled by militants days later, Ishay decided to devote his life to studying Jewish scripture.

    A monotonous humming fills the halls of the Ponevezh Yeshiva in the Israeli city of Bnei Brak. The plaster on the walls is crumbling. Halogen lights bathe the room in a white light. Around 300 young men in dark suits move their upper bodies back and forth in a fast rhythm. Their eyes are fixed on the red leather-bound editions of the Torah in front of them.
