We are compiling a history of sea rescue out of Maraetai as it has operated from 1975 and it will be 50 years in 2025. I am trying to locate the present owners of Miss Maraetai, the original rescue vessel that the Maraetai Beach Boating Club owned. Miss Maraetai was a 16-foot Seacraft clinker-built runabout with a petrol inboard Falcon motor. The last information I have is that about 15 -20 years ago it was sold to someone in Papatoetoe, who on-sold it about 20 years ago.

After five days of terrible anchoring at Ilha do Fogo, eight boats made a run for it. There was a brief weather window and we all decided to grab it and head for the next safe haven of Linga Linga (ca 220 nautical miles away). We were among the front of the group, and after a day of sailing the discussion started between the boats if we should continue directly to Richards Bay. If we were to have a shot at that, we’d need to get our gennaker (large foresail) functioning.

The tug and barge tasked with recovering fuel from the Manawanui have encountered moderate seas during their passage to Samoa but are now approximately halfway to their destination. Despite the challenges posed by the weather, salvors are optimistic that fuel recovery operations will begin later this month. This update was shared by Commodore Andrew Brown, the NZDF Senior National Representative for Operation Resolution, during a meeting with Samoa’s Marine Pollution Advisory Committee (MPAC).
