Later this spring, the city of Lake Havasu will be replacing stop signs at the intersection of Jamaica and McCulloch Blvd with a stop light. This expensive project, costing over $1 million dollars ($500K over budget), will negatively impact the safety of everyone traveling through this intersection. A News-Herald article from early April prompted me to research why this stop light is happening.

Growing up as a theater kid outside of Chicago, Anthony Rapp became a successful stage actor at a very early age, including a long run in the original Broadway production of Rent. His many other credits include landing the role of Lt. Commander Paul Stamets on Star Trek: Discovery. We spoke this week as he was taking his 2-year-old son Rye to a snowy park in New York, and I asked him if he remembered that famous math equation from "Rent," how many minutes are in a year?

For Juliet Mills, acting is part of the family business. The daughter of British actor Sir John Mills and older sister of Haley Mills, Juliet has starred in film, TV, and the stage since she was a teenager in the UK. Mills will be a guest this week at Pensacon along with her sister, Haley, and her husband actor Maxwell Caufield.

The City of Pensacola and the Downtown Improvement Board are teaming up to help make downtown a little quieter. The DIB has allocated $25,000 to pay off-duty Pensacola police officers to monitor noise along Palafox Street from after-market mufflers and loud car sound systems. “We are going to be out there to enforce the state statutes that are already on the books,” said Pensacola Mayor D. C. Reeves as he announced the project last week at City Hall.

Even before he took office, crafting a strategic plan for the future of Pensacola has been a priority for Mayor D. C. Reeves. Now the city is actively looking for input for a comprehensive plan to guide the city through the next decade. “We’ve had lots of plans” said Reeves. “But I don’t know that we’ve had a holistic, visionary strategic plan about what we want this city to be. So this strategic plan that we are working on is not a 100 step plan.
Movie makers are busy in Northwest Florida

Suppose there is a mass die-off of honeybees in a small town on the panhandle, and then the bees come back to life. And they were not happy. That’s the premise of the movie Zombeez, a film that was made entirely in Northwest Florida. Pensacola would never be mistaken for Hollywood. It probably would have a tough time masquerading as Hollywood, Florida. However, there are filmmakers working and making movies here in the local region.
Bruce Beach Phase 1 to open this month

The project to rehabilitate Bruce Beach in downtown Pensacola has been in the works for most of this decade. Now the work on phase one of the project is just about done. Pensacola Mayor D. C. Reeves has announced the playground at Bruce Beach will open on Saturday morning, April 27. “We have the Portland Loo being installed on (April) 19th,” said Reeves at his weekly press conference on Tuesday.
Pensacola to roll out 'smart trash cans'

Smart trash cans are coming to Pensacola. Starting April 1, the city will be adding QR codes to customer’s curbside bins that will connect to the sanitation website. At his weekly press conference at City Hall, Mayor D. C. Reeves announced the rollout saying this direct link will make dealing with the department easier. “If you have a question or concern, or you don’t know how to find the number or the website, now your trash can will speak to you,” said Reeves.

The University of West Florida will be hosting one of the nation’s political scientists next week. Dr. Patrick Deneen is a professor of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame. His 2018 book “Why Liberalism Failed” has been published in 20 languages around the world and earned praise from former President Barack Obama.
Khary Payton to appear at Pensacon (tiger not included)

Fans of the Walking Dead comic books could not wait to finally see King Ezekiel on screen. The character, along with his pet tiger Shiva, first appeared in issue No. 108 of the comics and finally turned up on the TV series at the beginning of season 7. It was actor Khary Payton who brought Ezekiel to life, with his booming voice and impressive dreadlocks. The actor was asked about joining an established show as a very anticipated character. Khary Payton: Well, that was fun.
