The total projected cost of Barrie’s ice-storm cleanup is $24.95 million, but the city could recover $22 million in provincial disaster relief funding — leaving a net $2.9-million bill. Kevin Rankin, Barrie’s manager of parks and forestry operations, laid out the details in a June 4 memo to council and the storm’s effect. “The damage to trees and vegetation will have a lasting impact that will take years to recover,” he said.

The deal could get worse for non-Barrie residents wanting to register and use city recreation programs. Barrie’s finance and responsible governance committee passed a motion Wednesday evening that registration for non-residents for city recreation program begin seven days following the opening of registration for Barrie residents. And that the non-residents surcharge for using the city’s recreation programs be increased to 25 per cent.

The long wait isn’t over for a new community centre in south Barrie, but it’s getting there. This afternoon, Mayor Alex Nuttall unveiled 100 acres, near McKay Road East and Huronia Road, where the 'South Barrie Mixed-Use Recreation Complex' will one day sit. It’s to include four ice rinks, an eight-lane, 25-metre pool, seven leisure and therapy pools, a triple gymnasium, multi-purpose and community space, as well as the new south-end city library.
