was the star columnist at The Davis Enterprise for 55 years, until one day in May he was suddenly laid off. The mighty state of Oregon, the land of my birth, has pulled the plug on its plan to make the entire West Coast adhere to either year-round Pacific Daylight Time or year-round Pacific Standard Time. Of course there was the usual silly debate, with claims that switching clocks twice a year causes an increase in heart attacks, crop failure, skiing accidents on Mt. Hood and declining water quality in Crater Lake.
