The reason why magicians never reveal their secret is because it would mean losing the audience. They’d see the illusion for what it was — a con — and ask for their money back. That thought crossed my mind while Ryan Yarbrough was casting his own spell on the Dodgers on Sunday night. His trick was to make an 88-mph fastball appear so unhittable that not even LA’s elite lineup could barrel it up.

The difference between Yarbrough and the average birthday party sorcerer is that one of them isn’t faking it.

I wonder how many Yankees fans remained in front of their flat screens long enough in the 18-2 massacre by the Dodgers to watch Pablo Reyes lobbing 42-mph Eephus pitches during the eighth-inning garbage time. Not many, I would guess (smart move), even if that meant an even larger swath of viewers missed a telling moment during Fox’ postgame spot. Host Kevin Burkhardt, Alex Rodriguez, David Ortiz and Derek Jeter were struggling to make sense of the carnage.

Every once in a while you come across a stretch of the baseball season when the noise dies down and the winds of war are reduced to a gentle breeze. So put aside the obsession with Juan Soto’s mental state, stop sweating Giancarlo Stanton’s return date and how soon the Yankees can put DJ LeMahieu out of his misery. All that can wait while the Yankees take on the Dodgers in LA this weekend. The showdown is a good one – a replay of the 2024 World Series or maybe a preview of the ’25 edition.

One of those nights when almost everything went right for #Yankees. And they didn't even need Aaron Judge to get there. https://t.co/lrEeRf8pEZ

Spoke to Max Fried about his stealth pick-off move. Also talked to the Rays, who called Fried a "unicorn" who's almost impossible to steal on. #Yankees https://t.co/9CWeFFUXwx
