ST. PETERSBURG — Two decades after dominating local high school courts, Marreese Speights is back where it all began. Speights, the St. Petersburg native with both NCAA and NBA championship rings, has been named boys basketball coach at Northside Christian. He replaces Doug Scull after serving as an assistant at the University of South Florida last season. “My goal is to be there,” Speights said.

GULFPORT — The applause began before the oaths were even finished. In a packed City Hall, three women raised their right hands and made history. On April 1, Gulfport swore in Mayor Karen Love, Ward 2 council member Marlene Shaw and Ward 4 council member Nancy Earley. They joined reelected council members April Thanos and Cosi Jackson to complete the city’s first all-female City Council — and one of the few, if any, in the state.

The district winners in each region automatically qualify for the playoffs and secure homefield advantage in the region quarterfinals series if they are not playing another champion. Now, Mark Buchanan’s coaching career at Indian Rocks Christian is over. In a mid-January decision, Indian Rocks Christian parted ways with Buchanan, leaving the coach searching for answers. “The decision left me stunned,” said Buchanan, who went public with what happened two weeks ago on social media.
Former NFL All-Pro Weaver named coach at IRC

Indian Rocks Christian named former NFL All-Pro fullback Leonard Weaver as its new football coach Tuesday. Weaver replaces Mark Buchanan, who IRC parted ways with in mid-January. Weaver comes to Indian Rocks Christian from Carson-Newman University, where he spent two seasons coaching running backs at his alma mater. Under Weaver’s guidance, running backs Tyree Nelson and TJ King earned All-South Atlantic Conference honors as part of a balanced attack in 2022.
