Cambridge has been on a tear to build separated bike lanes on city streets over the last four years, setting ambitious targets and bypassing traditional community engagement processes to set up safer biking infrastructure. But local elections Tuesday night — driven by key issues like housing, building energy efficiency and, yes, bike lanes — made the project’s future murky.

The MBTA’s General Manager Phil Eng says problems with the new Green Line Extension are more extensive than first thought. The tracks’ prefabricated ties were built with the rail gauge too narrow and will have to be repaired. According to Eng, the problem was identified as far back as April 2021.

The “Coalition to Stop Private Jet Expansion at Hanscom or Anywhere” rallied at the State House Monday, urging the governor to apply pressure on Massport and cancel an expansion of the Bedford airport. They presented Gov. Maura Healey with a petition with over 10,000 signatures, requesting that she use her influence to convince Massport to cancel what’s known as the North Airfield project.

The MBTA will shut down the Green Line extension branch between Lechmere and Union Square from Sept. 18 to Oct. 13. The Squires Bridge over the MBTA tracks in Somerville — which carries 40,000 vehicles a day — needs repairs. In order to do the job, the T has to suspend service on those tracks. The Squires Bridge repairs were supposed to be completed earlier this summer, but local officials balked at the lack of adequate warning.
