Learning Doctrinal VocabularyI wrote Daily Doctrine so that there might be a resource that would help ordinary people in the church really get the best of our theological tradition. I hope to be something of a translator, not from one language to another but from one register to another.

Many church plants run up against roadblocks that look like impossibilities. Our church, Trinity Baptist in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, is only weeks old. But for months as we prepared to start, the Lord kept us praying and searching for a meeting place. We had plenty of people who wanted to covenant together. Fundraising came along encouragingly. But our prospects for a meeting space were the opposite of encouraging, even up to a couple months before our planned covenanting date.

Zeal Without KnowledgeOn one hand, it’s certainly true that there have been lots of wonderful, godly examples of Christian faithfulness who have probably not had the opportunity to be well-taught in doctrine. So we wouldn’t want to say that only the most brilliant theologians can really follow God, or, vice versa, that if you have all of the knowledge in your head, then by default you’ll be a godly Christian. We know that doesn’t happen. And yet we don’t want zeal or passion without knowledge.

The Need for ChangeWhen Paul described the change that takes place at salvation, he said: “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come” (2 Cor. 5:17). But he knew that after salvation all Christians have many thoughts and actions that they still need to give up, and many they need to take on. There needs to be a massive shift in thinking in many areas. Jesus faced the same challenge with the disciples. A. B.

Maintain UnityWhenever we talk about doctrine—and Christians really get into theology—we can run into the potential problem of really sharp disagreements.

Election and ReprobationThe terms election and predestination are often used interchangeably, both referring to God’s gracious decree whereby he chooses some for eternal life. In Romans 8:30 Paul speaks of those whom God has predestined, called, justified, and (in the end) glorified. In Romans 8:33 Paul references the “elect,” apparently a synonym for the predestined ones described a few verses earlier.

You Are in ChristWhen I last had any extended time watching daytime TV—I was at home, sick—it became quickly apparent to me that we have a fixation with properties. There were shows about renovating homes, finding homes in the country or in the Caribbean, homes being auctioned, homes on a budget, homes of the super wealthy. Even when we’re not wanting or needing to move to a new home, it can be instinctive to look up property prices.

When the Issue Isn’t the IssueRecently, I found myself in a disagreement. In my work context, I have been setting a new direction. I discovered that a colleague I respect was worried it was the wrong direction, so we sat down to talk about it. After forty-five minutes of amicable and professional discussion, it was clear we still took a different view. And then something interesting happened: my colleague trusted me by opening up about her early life as the child of alcoholic parents.

Attributes of a Good PastorOne of my congregants wanted me to be more alluring, more charismatic, more humorous. He wanted me to hold his attention such that I would keep him coming back every week. This is certainly understandable. Most of us enjoy listening to faithful brothers like Matt Chandler, John Piper, David Platt, or Kevin DeYoung. And for good reason. These brothers are charismatic. They’re funny, radiantly passionate, wicked smart, handsome, and/or comfortable in their own skin.

Good Authority Is Not Unaccountable but Submits to a Higher AuthorityNathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”—John 1:49The Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.—John 5:19I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me. —John 8:28Jesus is king. Jesus obeys. How do we hold those two truths together?
