It’s the thing we create by affirming one another through the ordinances. To offer a definition, church membership is a church’s affirmation and oversight of a Christian’s profession of faith and discipleship, combined with the Christian’s submission to the church and its oversight.

The Authority of ScripturePreaching has to be the first way we lead as pastors, in one sense, because it’s inherent within our position, within our role. It’s a qualification that we have to be able to teach. When you look at the pastoral letters to Timothy and Titus, they are full of things like, Exhort the people. Devote yourself to public reading of Scripture, teaching, reproving, exhortation. All of these things have this connotation that the Bible commands us to.

To answer the question, “What authority do pastors have?” you have to pick a side in the polity debates. I choose elder-led congregationalism. My sense, however, is that many Christians and pastors avoid the topic of polity because it’s contested territory. Maybe it feels unimportant. Besides, can’t we read through 1 and 2 Timothy, Titus, and passages like Acts 20:17–38 and 1 Peter 5:1–4, and easily answer the question?

Compel the GospelHow we respond to bad authority depends on what you mean by bad authority. There’s everyday, typical, selfish uses of authority that can be lived with, but then I also want to be very sensitive to those kinds of abuses of such a nature that they can’t be lived with. Let’s start in that first category.
