Dr. David Joyce has stepped down as president of Averett University, effective Friday, following a serious medical diagnosis for his wife, Lynne, according to an email from the university’s Board of Trustees. Rev. Dr. Dan Carlton, chair of the board, announced the transition in a message to alumni Friday afternoon, stating that the decision was made so the couple could devote their full attention to Lynne’s health.

In its first showing since its inception late last year, Danville-based Improv Anywhere made its debut on the Flying Disc Clubhouse stage in Blanch, North Carolina, on Saturday, March 1. “It was an incredible experience,” Katelyn Murray, troupe cofounder, said. “The audience at Flying Disc Clubhouse was warm, welcoming, and ready to laugh. It was great to be up there with the troupe, performing in-the-moment comedy for a surprisingly packed house audience.

A Danville firefighter died Tuesday from an accidental gunshot wound, the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday. Deputies responded to the 900 block of Countryside Drive in Ringgold at 7:42 p.m. March 4 for a report of a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso. Emergency responders found Kaleb Barker, 31, unresponsive and transported him to SOVAH Health in Danville, where he was pronounced dead.

Chatham native Charlie Hurt is the newest co-host on “FOX & Friends Weekend.”Hurt, a FOX News contributor, took the place of “FOX & Friends Weekend” co-host Will Cain who moved to the 4 p.m. weekday timeslot on FOX News with “The Will Cain Show.”The announcement came last week during a Jan. 15 segment with “FOX & Friends” co-anchor Steve Doocy. “It's a great honor and it's great being on a team of people that are so good at what they do, they don't let even me fail,” Hurt joked.
