One person was killed and four people wounded in a shootout that happened early Sunday at an outdoor gathering in north Danville---and a suspect is in custody. Danville Police got the call just before 1:30 a.m. Sunday the 100 block of Carver Drive. That’s a dead-end street off of Bradley Road. There were a number of people attending an outdoor gathering near the intersection of Carver Drive and Cheyenne Drive --- a caller reported multiple shots fired.

The Town of Hurt council approved a proposed budget for advertisement ahead of a public hearing and adoption scheduled for June on Tuesday, May 13, after two continuations of a meeting started May 6. The proposed budget includes a real estate tax rate increase from 13 cents per $100, to 15 cents per $100 of assessed value, and increases to volumetric water rates, and the base rate fee. Personal property tax rates are proposed to remain unchanged from the current amount.

A Danville woman charged with killing an elderly man in her care is not competent to stand trial…at least not right now. Danville Police served a search warrant at a home in the 100-block of Pineview Drive March tenth. They found 78-year old Arvel Shrewsbury dead in his house. They arrested 58-year old Jeanette Perez Staton at and charged her with second degree murder.

The owners of the River District’s tallest building are hinting at its future. Masonic Temple Redevelopment, LLC, purchased the Masonic Temple from a group called “Where Eagles Dare” for just over a million dollars two months ago. On their webpage, Williamsburg-based Cornerstone Hospitality lists the property as a future member of the Marriott Tribute Portfolio.

One of eight Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Deputies to die in the line of duty was honored last weekend. The Board of Supervisors last year approved a resolution to name the bridge on Route 40 West Gretna Road over Route 29 in memory of Deputy Sheriff Eugene B. McBride. The sign was unveiled Friday with several of McBride's family members in attendance. On November 2, 1969, McBride responded to a disorderly conduct call. He arrested a suspect but started suffering chest pains.
