The Magic Millions yearling record set on Thursday lasted little more than 24 hours with a filly out of Sunlight setting a new mark late on Friday’s ‘super session’. The daughter of Home Affairs got to $3.2 million before being knocked down to Japanese trainer Mitsu Nakauchida. The filly assumed honours as the highest-priced yearling ever sold by Magic Millions from the colt by Snitzel out of Humma Humma, who sold for $2.8 million on Day 3.

Ciaron Maher’s quest for a third Magic Millions 2yo Classic (1200m) in five years has just gotten a bit harder after his sole runner Icarian Dream drew barrier 21 of 21 for the $3 million feature. Maher’s mother Eileen drew the barrier at the famous Surfer’s Paradise beach barrier draw but Maher is happy with the filly, who was last seen winning the Group 3 B J McLachlan Stakes (1200m).

Chris Waller denied a top Japanese galloper in last Saturday’s Cox Plate and he will look to bring down another of its stars this weekend. The champion trainer has Joliestar heading towards the $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m) at Rosehill. The Group 1-winning daughter of Zoustar is considered the best local hope in a race that also includes Japanese Group 1 winner Ascoli Piceno and unbeaten French gelding Lazzat.

Plenty Of Ammo flashed her Empire Rose Stakes credentials at Moonee Valley on Saturday, landing a maiden Black Type victory in the $400,000 Crystal Mile. The Symon Wilde-trained mare upstaged the boys when she finished too powerfully for her male rivals in the 1600-metre Group 2. The Crystal Mile was just the second start this campaign for the daughter of Rebel Raider, and only seventh start overall, and although she is six years old, the Wilde stable is excited about what is to come.

Mr Brightside has effectively been ruled out of this year’s $5 million Group 1 King Charles III Stakes with the gelding’s final Cox Plate lead-up run to be the week prior. Co-trainer Ben Hayes said he and his brothers had settled on an October 12 run for the seven-year-old, with the $1 million Group 1 The Might And Power (2000m) at Caulfield or the $2 million Group 2 Hill Stakes (1900m) at Rosehill his two options.

A total of 123 horses are officially in with a chance of winning this year’s Melbourne Cup after entries for this year’s $8.5 million race were revealed on Tuesday afternoon. Defending champion Without A Fight heads a list of 103 locally trained entries, while 20 horses trained overseas were paid-up for the race that will this year be run on November.
