Wander just half a mile from the Deep River Rail Trail and the historic Faith Rock in Randolph County, and you’ll find a sweet reward: grilled vanilla pound cake at Franklinville Diner. At the family-owned restaurant on Main Street, each thick wedge is prepared to order, grilled in butter on the flat-top until a crispy golden crust forms. The batter is made in a 1972 avocado green Sunbeam mixer — an essential part of the process, diner owner Andrea Priddy says jokingly.

At the foot of Falls Lake Dam, a shiny rainbow composed of bikes and helmets perches outside of The Bike Guy at the start of the Neuse River Greenway. The locally owned and operated bike shop is just the latest iteration to hold space in this 150-year-old building that was once a farm supply store. Part watering hole, part repair and rental shop, The Bike Guy is celebrated its 10th year in 2023, opening a few months after the greenway was completed.

An eyesore of a building has been bulldozed in my town. Those familiar with where I live will perhaps recognize what’s left of the old structure. The rest of you will need help identifying it. I stood in the street and took a picture of what remained, although even this is gone now. This building was once our county’s health department.
Club members honored for receiving 'Hank Aaron' scholarships

On Jan. 30 The Cindy Platt Boys & Girls Club of Transylvania County held an awards dinner honoring club members who are recipients of the Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Scholarship for 2023. Eleven Transylvania County students won scholarships ranging from $1,400 to $3,500. In all, the 11 student athletes were awarded $26,700, more than any Boys & Girls Club in the country.
