SAN DIEGO – Kratos Defense (Nasdaq: KTOS) and GE Aerospace (NYSE: GE) announced in early June that they entered a new level of their partnership, signing a teaming agreement. They also released images of their jointly developed aircraft engine. Called the GEK800, the engine will have 800 pounds of force and is appropriate for military drones known as collaborative combat aircraft (CCA), according to a Kratos representative. The partners plan several models of low-cost expendable turbofan engines.

The change of the calendar and the arrival of a new administration in Washington seems to spell increased opportunity for Sempra (NYSE: SRE) – it looks a lot more likely that Sempra Infrastructure will be able to bring a proposed second phase of its Port Arthur, Texas liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant to market.

SAN DIEGO – Shield AI has announced that it is working to put its Hivemind autonomy software on an unmanned helicopter that Airbus U.S. Space & Defense wants to build for the U.S. Marine Corps. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Under the deal announced earlier this spring, Airbus plans to integrate Shield AI’s Hivemind autonomy software on the Airbus MQ-72C Logistics Connector – an unmanned variant of the U.S. Army’s UH-72 Lakota helicopter.

POWAY – Electric aircraft are making the jump from theory to fact. A Vermont company called Beta Technologies announced last week (June 3) that its all-electric aircraft carried five people from East Hampton, New York to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. Northrop Grumman Corp. (NYSE: NOC) has been working with Scaled Composites on a hybrid military aircraft known as the XRQ-73. The corporation is handling the project out of its Redondo Beach office.

SAN DIEGO – A new generation is taking charge at Frost Hardwood Lumber Co. as a subsequent generation gets started at the family business. The lumber wholesaler and retailer on Miramar Road is 114 years old. Only a small fraction of family businesses survive that long, said CEO Byram Frost. Frost is a fourth-generation member of the Frost family. He will be the new face of Frost Hardwood in the coming year, which will also see the business transition to a new information technology system.
