SAN DIEGO – Kratos Defense (Nasdaq: KTOS) and GE Aerospace (NYSE: GE) announced in early June that they entered a new level of their partnership, signing a teaming agreement. They also released images of their jointly developed aircraft engine. Called the GEK800, the engine will have 800 pounds of force and is appropriate for military drones known as collaborative combat aircraft (CCA), according to a Kratos representative. The partners plan several models of low-cost expendable turbofan engines.

SAN DIEGO – Stretch Affect, a wellness business that combines physical therapy, fitness training and nutrition, nearly went out of business as it was just starting when the country went into COVID lockdown in 2020. Rather than killing the business, the pandemic “forced us to innovate and create a premium offering,” said Chris Wilke, who co-founded Stretch Affect with Kyle Valery. “We are very much a survival story through the pandemic,” Wilke said.

CHULA VISTA – Retirement Housing Foundation and Community Congregational Development have started construction of a $40 million Chula Vista affordable apartment project for low-income tenants 55 and older. The seven-story Congregational Place at 305 E St. will have 56 one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartments. Half of the apartments will be earmarked for low-income tenants with mobility impairments. An additional 2% of the apartments will be set aside for those with hearing or visual impairments.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY – The number of homes up for sale jumped dramatically in May, reaching the highest level since 2020, according to an online residential real estate marketer. “It’s a jump, but going back over the years, we generally see inventory start to ramp up in May through the summer months,” said Joshua Ohl, senior director of market analytics at CoStar Group San Diego. “People are figuring out a way to afford these properties.
