When a driver gets their first career win in a series, notably when it’s for a team that’s only checkered flag in the past seven seasons came on a superspeedway, words like “stunning,” “shocking” and “upset” may come to mind. Leave those words aside when it comes to what Josh Berry did on Sunday (March 16) at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Berry’s exploits on Sunday did not come out of nowhere.

HAMPTON, Ga. — 29 times a winner in the NASCAR Cup Series, Kyle Larson has never won on a superspeedway/drafting track. He nearly changed that in Sunday’s (Feb. 23) Ambetter Health 400 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. As the field rolled through turns 3 and 4 coming to the line in overtime, Larson led on the inside line, only to have Christopher Bell inch into the lead with Carson Hocevar joining in to make it a three-way race for the lead.

The tracks have been different, as have the stakes and emotions each time that the team from Stuart, Va., has reigned victorious. But few emotions resonated more than in August at Daytona International Speedway when Harrison Burton pulled off a stunning victory for his first NASCAR Cup Series win and the 100th overall win for WBR.

The official record shows William Byron finished third on Sunday (Oct. 6) at Talladega Superspeedway and Christopher Bell was sixth. In a race that usually amounts to a demolition derby, and Sunday (Oct. 6) was that, taking a chance is not worth it if you’re in a position to advance by way of points to the next round of the playoffs. The goal for these drivers is not so much to win, but rather to survive. Both did that by probably not forcing the issue. But what if this was not a postseason race?
