Don’t look now, but multiple drivers from RFK Racing are racing like they belong in the postseason. The trouble, of course, is getting there. A start to the season riddled by bad fortune and ill-timed luck has put Brad Keselowski in must-win mode to make the playoffs, as he is 30th overall in points. RFK teammate Chris Buescher is on a little more solid postseason bubble footing as the third-highest in the standings among drivers without a win.

Without question, Chase Briscoe was the class of the field on Sunday (June 22) at Pocono Raceway. He earned points with his finish in the opening stage, won the second stage and led the most laps at 72 of 160 overall. But he still had to finish off the win in the late going, maintaining his lead and also managing fuel mileage to take his first win since going over to Joe Gibbs Racing. More importantly, he clinched a spot in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs.

In a very true sense, NASCAR will experience a groundbreaking when the NASCAR Cup Series caps off what will be a historic weekend. For the first time, the league’s top series will stage a points event south of the U.S.’ border on Sunday, June 15, at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez course in Mexico City. But this groundbreaking didn’t happen overnight. It’s a partial groundwork resulting from seeds planted some 20 years ago.

The NASCAR Cup Series will make history this weekend with its first points event held in Mexico. Due to factors not of its own doing, Sunday’s (June 15) race in Mexico City at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez course could be the series’ first…and last race south of the border. There’s no way of avoiding it. Basically, everything can become a flashpoint issue these days if anyone wants it to.

Tuesday’s (June 3) news from Atlanta that the speedway would be known as EchoPark Speedway by way of a seven-year multi-million dollar partnership may have come as a surprise to the keen observer. But it’s not the first time that racetracks hosting NASCAR events have taken on naming rights deals. In fact, the crown jewel of Speedway Motorsports itself, Charlotte Motor Speedway, spanned 10 years as Lowe’s Motor Speedway from 1999 to 2009. That naming was unchartered territory for the sport.
