Nettleton’s Bailey Payne and Tupelo’s Andrew Brown have been voted Daily Journal Athletes of the Week. Payne, a sophomore pitcher, allowed one run on seven hits with 17 strikeouts and three walks in a two-game sweep of Choctaw County in the Class 3A playoffs. Also, she was 2 of 7 at the plate with two RBIs. Payne earned 66.5% of the vote in the Female Athlete of the Week Twitter poll, beating out East Union’s Lucy Cochran and Myrtle’s Ally Murphy.

Recently seen, heard and experienced at my favorite watering hole, The Stables…• Jack got a new shirt. Nice royal blue short-sleeved button-up. You could still see the creases in the sleeves. It was the most dressed-up I’ve ever seen him. He also sported a pair of blue jeans, which caused a wave among my fellow patrons (Jack normally wears khakis or shorts). Not sure what’s going on; maybe he’s got a girlfriend.
