Ellie Sun, a fourth-grader at Tower Hill School, competed in the Drive, Chip and Putt national finals on Sunday at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. The Newark resident finished seventh among girls ages 7-9, one of eight divisions for girls and boys that was televised live on Golf Channel. The 9-year-old finished sixth among the 10 finalists in her division in the long driving competition, belting her best tee shot 173 yards.

We are right in the middle of the busiest time in Delaware high school sports. The spring season. Baseball. Softball. Girls and boys lacrosse. Tennis. Golf. Track and field. Boys volleyball. Girls soccer. All of them are being played all across the state, at least six days a week. Sometimes – especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays – most of them are taking place at the same time. And the best part is, the vast majority of the players, coaches and officials are happy.

The tournament starts Wednesday with 72 golfers, but only the top 30 after two rounds advance to play at Augusta National on Saturday. McCrery, 18, won the 2023 DIAA Golf Tournament and will play collegiately at Duke. Brinker, a recent Duke graduate, is making her fourth appearance in the ANWA. Avery McCrery still remembers a couple of things from watching a practice round before the 2015 Masters, her first trip to Augusta National Golf Club.
