A state trooper charged with shoplifting more than $1,000 worth of merchandise, including golf balls, from local Target stores was placed on probation for six months May 5 after admitting sufficient facts existed for a finding of guilty. The legal move, a common one known as an Alford plea, will result in the charges being dropped against the trooper, Zachariah Kent, upon successful fulfillment of its terms.

AUBURN — Curtis M. Field, the former Auburn High School athletic director arrested in January after police allege he propositioned a local high school minor, is slated to seek dismissal of the charge against him May 6. In recently filed court papers, a lawyer for Field wrote that while the Police Department’s legal complaint “might reveal an aspect of Mr. Field’s personal life,” it failed to prove he knowingly violated the law.
