Photo by Peyton Williams/Getty Images Going into the offseason for college football, my biggest hope was that Bill Belichick would do enough to get me excited about the program. The lowest hanging fruit in all of this is creating a roster that could compete, which certainly doesn’t seem like a tall ask in the transfer portal era. You got an increased budget compared to what Mack Brown had, so you can spend for good players, and we can see what happens from there. Simple, right?

Photo by Chris Leduc/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images The NCAA transfer portal re-opens today for football, and the Tar Heels just got an unfortunate surprise: redshirt junior Beau Atkinson has decided to enter the portal off the heels of what was a pretty impressive 2024 campaign. This is a major blow to UNC’s roster considering the fact that the defensive line was already a work in progress.

Robert Deutsch-Imagn Images Tonight has been an active night for the Tar Heels. First, it was announced that UNC was no longer recruiting BYU transfer Kanon Catchings, which ultimately led to him committing to Georgia. Now, former Alabama power forward Jarin Stevenson has committed to the Tar Heels, earning Hubert Davis yet another talented player in the transfer portal. If you aren’t super familiar with Alabama’s roster but you feel like you’ve heard Stevenson’s name before, there’s a reason.

Photo by Alika Jenner/Getty Images Now that the Tar Heels have fulfilled a big need through the transfer portal by securing a commitment from former Arizona Wildcat, Henri Veesaar, all eyes have been on whether or not they will be able to fix the problem that they now have a point guard. At this moment, there isn’t a real point guard on the roster, but there are at least two combo guards that theoretically could find themselves logging minutes at the one.

Bob Donnan-Imagn Images Yesterday afternoon, Ian Jackson announced that he was entering the transfer portal after just one season with the Tar Heels. This announcement, as you would expect, caused a lot of commotion from both fans and analysts, mostly because it was expected that he would enter the NBA Draft if he were to make any kind of move.

……..but all of their losses were to SEC teams lol what does non-con have to do with anything? If you schedule better or worse, you still lost to two unranked SEC teams lol

Alabama's AD says they'll have to evaluate how they schedule after missing out on the College Football Playoff 👀 (via @Greg_Byrne) https://t.co/62njZvPg13

That was definitely a game that happened.
