SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) -Tuesday, at 10:06 p.m., the vernal equinox marks the beginning of spring. The equinox refers to the point in time when the sun is directly over the equator. In the northern hemisphere, spring begins, followed by summer. In the southern hemisphere, fall begins, followed by winter. Equinox comes from two Latin words that mean “equal night.” Perhaps you, like most people, think we have exactly 12 hours of the day and 12 hours of the night on the equinox. Well...not really.

Astronomers use standard definitions of sunrise and sunset to measure the day/night split in 24 hours. That means sunrise is defined as when the first bit of the sun’s disk appears, and sunset is when the last bit of the disk vanishes.
