Some Delaware schools had played girls lacrosse for decades before it became an official sport of the Delaware Secondary School Athletic Association in 1998. Mel Bride, who coached St. Andrew's to the first DSSA title while eight months pregnant, said at the time the newly-implemented tournament – whittling down the best of Delaware's 16 teams – ratcheted up the level of play. "The players are all psyched up for the tournament," she said.
