By Brandon LaChanceAn important contract negotiation took place at the Midland Community Unit School District 7 meeting Wednesday night. Midland teachers and staff as well as the Midland Education Association, which represents the 49 teachers and 650-plus students in District 7, have been discussing new contracts with the district since February. Midland Junior High science teacher Jennifer Williams has been at Midland for eight of her 18 years as an educator.

St. Bede Academy alumni and friends helped raise an estimated $390,000 at the 42nd Annual St. Bede Auction on Saturday, June 14. Present at the auction were members of SBA graduation classes from 1960 to 2016 as well as their family, friends, and others who wanted to support the academy.

John French of Elite Seamless Gutters in Spring Valley was awarded a business redevelopment grant by the Spring Valley City Hall at the Monday, June 16 meeting. The grant is for the 220 W. Saint Paul St. location where he wants to improve his newly acquired building with new windows and doors, and is using the facade grant for the portion of the improvements to the building.

Lacon's new “one-stop-shop” DMV plans to streamline services for Marshall County drivers and vehicle owners. The DMV opening was announced by Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias in part of his ongoing modernization efforts. The one-stop-shop will provide an improved customer experience through reduced wait times and increased efficiency. It will eliminate several steps with cross trained employees offering both vehicle and driver services as a single counter.
