INTRODUCTION Today, 1.6% of all U.S. adults identify as transgender and/or nonbinary, and for adults ages 18–29 years old, 5.1% identify as trans and/or nonbinary (Brown, 2022). As trans people are gaining more visibility in U.S. society, they are disclosing their trans identity more openly (Puckett et al., 2022). Notably, after health professionals and friends, family members are the next main group of people that trans people disclose their identity to (Haimson & Veinot, 2020).

INTRODUCTION Family members like grandmothers and aunts are a central part of family life, especially Black, Latinx, Asian, Indigenous, and low-income family life (Gerstel, 2011; Sarkisian et al., 2012; Stack, 1975). For instance, grandparents often play an important role as caregivers and supporters of youth in marginalized families (Attar-Schwartz et al., 2009; Hayslip & Fruhauf, 2017; Monserud, 2008).

Research on youth, particularly on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth, misses important aspects of the lives of young people if this work focuses only on the parent-child relationship. A focus on parent-child relations can also overlook Black feminist and other women of color interventions to understanding the complex roles of maternal figures, or othermothers, in the lives of youth (Collins 2000; Troester 1984).
