In 2023 and 2024, Cafe Colucci (5849 San Pablo Ave., Oakland) and sister business Brundo Spice Company hosted resident chefs, offering skilled cooks a chance to show off their talents and develop their own menus with a particular focus on East African cuisine. In those first two years, the process was more informal, but for 2025, the team decided to take applications and hold a tasting to decide the third chef in the residency.

Kamala Harris is a city girl and I know shes got all the tea from her time in growing up in a mixed race home in the Bay Area. “As California goes, so goes the nation.” This saying is proving to be true more and more every day as I read headline news. The promise of the middle class is a myth and is now squeezed everywhere–not just here in California. Our labor force is squeezed. Wages are tight and the tensions are just as high as the rent. This isn’t a one presidential term issue. This is a worldwide labor and working class issue.
