Oakland Voices alumna Kristal Raheem (2021) recently joined YouthBeat, an Oakland-based digital media arts and media literacy training program for Oakland youth. Raheem, a graduate of Oakland public schools, seeks to empower Oakland youth as future storytellers. As YouthBeat’s development manager, she’s responsible for building donor relationships and leading fundraising campaigns for the organization.

The recalls of Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price appear to be successful. As on Wednesday night, over 65% of ballots counted so far, in both elections, favor the recalls. Each official has only been in office since the November 2022 election. So far, less than a quarter of ballots have been counted for all registered voters in Alameda County. As county registrars office updates election results, we’ll provide updates.

The Oaklandside analyzed the interviews to reveal a lack of faith in electoral politics to bring about change, and a desire for better information. Oaklanders began voting by mail for this year’s general election on Oct. 7. Some will choose to vote in person on or before Election Day, Nov. 5.

This isn’t a one presidential term issue. This is a worldwide labor and working class issue.

Oakland Voices is one of 205 small, local news outlets receiving a share of $20 million to close gaps in local news coverage. Press Forward, the nationwide movement to strengthen communities by reinvigorating local news, received over 900 proposals. The coalition funded twice as many news organizations as originally planned. Oakland Voices will receive $100,000 over two years.

Over 70 journalists and community members gathered on September 12 at Oakstop to discuss covering crime and safety in Oakland, and news media’s responsibility in engaging with communities facing violence. The event focused on research conducted by Baywell Health and Asian Health Services that revealed that despite increased crime reporting and public narratives about violence, this didn’t reflect the experience of many Black and Asian American residents of Oakland.

Oakland Voices launched its 2024 Community Journalism Academy to amplify the voices of Oakland residents and change the narrative about the Town. “This is a resilient group of people that want to tell compelling stories about Oakland,” said Rasheed Shabazz, co-director of Oakland Voices. Shabazz developed the curriculum, building on the work of former program coordinator Brenda Payton.
