Stewart had been accused of killing Philip Thomas, his former middle school teacher, two years earlier at the age of 18. A jury convicted Stewart of manslaughter and aggravated robbery and gave him a 65-year sentence.

In 2022, Rodriguez Elementary scored a high B in Texas’ public school ratings, the A-F scores that purport to show how well schools are educating students. Rodriguez’s just-released 2023 score is radically different. It shows the school dropping from an 88 to a 45 – an F.

Sam Kirsch was one of many protesters badly hurt during the Black Lives Matter demonstrations that shut down I-35 in May of 2020. Kirsch was shot in the face with a so-called beanbag round, a type of bullet used by police for crowd control. The bullet broke the bones around his eye, nose, and upper jaw, with the worst damage to his left eye.

Usually, the arguments with the best chances of saving an inmate’s life have already been heard and rejected by judges. Such is the case for Moises Mendoza, who the state plans to kill on April 23. Mendoza stood trial in 2005 for killing Rachelle Tolleson in Farmersville, northeast of Dallas. It was an open-and-shut case.

Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows of Lubbock winds up with the gavel as Senate Bill 2 passes Public school supporters made their voices heard but Republicans in the Texas House won in the end, approving Senate Bill 2, Gov. Greg Abbott’s school voucher bill, on an 86-63 vote at 2am this morning. No Democrats supported the proposal. Only two Republicans – Reps. Dade Phelan and Gary VanDeaver – opposed it. The Texas Senate has already approved SB 2, so it is now certain to become law.
