    According to a Construction Alert from OC Public Works, a Capistrano County Beach Shoreline Project that began on March 11 is expected to continue into May. A portion of the Capistrano Beach parking lot will be closed to the public as OC Parks and OC Public Works remove sandbags and construct a riprap revetment to slow down coastal erosion threatening the beach, walkway and parking lot. Work crews are working to remove all 240 feet of sandbags and replace them with rock.

    By this summer, the Ocean Institute aims to replace the Surf Science Yard with a new exhibit, “Estuary Exploration: Where Water Meets Land.”The new exhibit will offer visitors a chance to learn about a lesser known but crucial part of the ecosystem, Ocean Institute Senior Public Programs Manager Sara Larrea explained. “We want people to learn more about their native ecosystem,” Larrea said.

    The 54th annual Festival of Whales will begin on Friday, March 7, without its signature parade to kick off festivities this year. Instead, the city will host a three-day carnival at Lantern Bay Park, featuring a Ferris wheel overlooking the Dana Point Harbor, rides, games, a beer garden and more. Donna Kalez, Festival of Whales Chair and daughter of the festival founder Don Hansen, noted that this isn’t the first time the parade has taken a hiatus since its beginning.
