The Dana Point Chamber of Commerce inducted its 2024 board of directors and recognized the 2023 Ambassador, Citizen, Nonprofit and Business of the Year at its annual awards night on Jan. 24. The dinner and awards ceremony was dubbed “Business in Bloom” and took place at the Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach Resort & Club in Dana Point.

The proposed expansion of Marine Protected Areas in Southern California waters could impact the commercial and charter fishing industry in Dana Point and surrounding areas, which concerns some whose livelihood depends on fishing. The California Fish and Games Commission is expected to review proposals regarding changes to the Marine Protected Areas (MPA) at a meeting this month, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW).

Kathrine Dana Shaw, descendant of Dana Point’s namesake, author Richard Henry Dana, Jr., died on Jan. 8 at the age of 102. Before her death, Shaw released a book titled Mover and Shaker: Remarkable Woman Making Her Mark In A Man’s World. In the book, Shaw wrote about not following her family’s legacy in writing and the career she made as a businesswoman, play producer and publicist.
