There were 630 head of cattle on offer at Kilkenny Mart on Thursday, June 5, with the prices paid described by auctioneer George Candler as “marginally less for the heavy and overage cattle but a vibrant trade for store bullocks with up to €6.09/kg paid for four Charolais bullocks averaging 430kg making €2,620/head.

The Irish Angus All-Ireland Bull Calf Championships are set to take place at a new venue this year. With a prize fund of €15,000, this year’s competition will take place at Moate Show in Co. Westmeath on Sunday, August 24. The annual event previously took place at Iverk Show in Co. Kilkenny. While this event has changed location, Agriland understands there will still be a broad range of Angus classes at Iverk Show this year with significant prize money up for grabs.

2025 cattle export numbers to date are approaching 250,000 head, according to latest figures from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM). As of Sunday, May 25, a total of 247,000 cattle have been exported, which is an increase of 34,000 head of cattle or 16% on the same time last year. 76% of all cattle exports are calves, accounting for almost 188,000 head of total cattle exports.

The first episode of the Beef Brief podcast heard from Co. Cavan-based winter beef finisher Sam Hill, who took the opportunity to highlight challenges he is facing with spreading cattle slurry produced from beef cattle through Low Emission Slurry Spreading (LESS) systems. Farmers who had a stocking rate of 100kg N/Ha or above in 2023 are be required to use LESS equipment when slurry spreading this year.

There has been no increase in the number of farmers buying calves to rear this year – or the number of calves being reared by each farmer – according to official Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) data. As of May 28, 2025, DAFM data shows that 25,328 farmers bought calves so far this year. In the same time period last year, 25,349 herds notified DAFM of inward calf movements. The average number of calves moved into a herd in both periods was 19.
