The projected annual income for tillage farmers in 2024, as assessed by Teagasc in its latest National Farm Survey, comes in at just over €38,000. This is a far from encouraging scenario for a sector within which massive investment in infrastructure and machinery is required on an ongoing basis. International grain and oilseed prices rises have risen in line with a strengthening oil market, according to analysts with the Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board (AHDB). There are also indications that crop concerns and short covering by speculative traders have supported cereal prices over recent days. In the US, heavy rain has delayed the winter wheat harvest, while spring wheat crops have improved after a dry start.

There was a smaller sale of cattle at Balla Mart in Co. Mayo on Saturday, June 21, with the good weather attributing to the reduced numbers of cattle in the sale as farmers availed of the sunshine to get fieldwork completed. Commenting on the trade in the sale, Balla Mart manager Michael Nolan said store bullock prices were up by approximately 20c/kg on the previous sale, with heavier cattle types “holding their own” on price.
