Minister Heydon said for “the vast majority of farmers” GAEC 2 will have no impact on their day-to-day operations.

    Met Éireann has issued a thunderstorm warning for three counties which is in place until 8:00pm tonight (Wednesday, May 14). The national meteorological service has warned that these thunderstorms will be “scattered” at times in  Cork, Kerry and Limerick. According to Met Éireann the weather conditions in the three counties could result in frequent lightning and spot flooding. Once the thunderstorms die out it has forecast “clear skies”.

    The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) has today (Wednesday, May 14) confirmed that Blackgrass has been added to the list of noxious weeds that landowners must control. A public consultation had taken place last on proposals to legislation on noxious weeds to include Blackgrass following a recommendation set out in the Food Vision 2030 Tillage Report to “assist in controlling and preventing the spread of problem grass weeds on Irish farms”.

    Fresh warnings have been issued today (Wednesday, May 14) by the Veterinary Council of Ireland (VCI) that rural areas are facing large animal vet shortages, which the statutory body said is “essential for Ireland’s agricultural sector”. The VCI today published its first workforce report which highlights the difficulties in both recruiting and encouraging vets to work in “remote and vulnerable areas”.

    The Irish Cattle Breeding Federation’s (ICBF’s) annual general meeting (AGM) took place on Thursday, May 8, in Portlaoise, Co. Laois. The event was attended by the ICBF board of directors, which includes representatives from the Department of Agriculture, Food, and the Marine (DAFM), farm lobby groups, artificial insemination (AI) companies, and cattle breed societies.
