My brother and I were in Louisville, Kentucky, for our niece's husband's funeral this past Tuesday and learned all our great nieces and nephews were starting back to school on Thursday (Aug. 8). I asked if they were on a year round school schedule and the answer was no. It’s not even mid- August.

The days have seemed shorter − not even 24 hours, or so it seemed to me. I have always been an early riser and really don’t go to bed until after the 11 p.m. news. It just felt like those waking hours whizzed by at double time. In just two weeks, many students will return to the classroom.

We also celebrate the Fourth of July on Thursday. Unfortunately, some in my neighborhood have been celebrating early. They have been shooting off fireworks the past two weeks on the weekends and driving my neighbors' dogs crazy.

Hopefully, most stayed indoors with air conditioning. I’ve often wondered how folks who have outdoor jobs such as construction workers handle the heat and humidity − especially those who have the above named health concerns.

Today (Sunday) is Father’s Day − a day set aside to honor a paternal figure in one’s life. It may be your biological father, stepfather, adopted father, brother, uncle, grandpa or a close family friend. Whatever the relationship, it is usually someone who has had great influence in one’s life. The day was first proposed by Sonora Smart Dodd in Spokane, Washington, in 1909. She did so to honor her father who had raised six children after his wife had died suddenly.

I don’t know about you but it seems to me that 2024 has picked up the speed and is doing a fast trot toward the end of the year. June is going to be an extremely busy month for me. I have invitations to two weddings, four graduations, my high school alumni banquet and a scheduled surgical procedure — and all in 30 short days. In addition, I help teach 5- to 8-year-olds in Sunday School every week.
