Spring arrived in all her glory on March 20, when the vernal equinox took place. It is wonderful to see a faint green color creeping over our yard as it wakes up and begins to show new life. Soon the peepers will wake up and begin their spring chorus. It is time to look for our returning bird species and to clean out our bird boxes as well. The state is restocking our trout streams for the dedicated fishermen.

The season of Lent is upon us. The Capon Bridge United Methodist Church held the charge’s joint Ash Wednesday service on March 5, at 7 p.m.Our joint Methodist 5th Sunday service will be hosted by Capon Chapel on March 30, at 10 a.m. Come out and worship together with us and celebrate our eternal salvation.

I am hoping for a Robin sighting soon. Last year I spotted two of them on a sunny afternoon in the latter part of January. My hopes have been dashed so far. If you have seen them already, cheer us all up and tell us about it. Congratulations to Bryan Brill on his appointment as County Commissioner. He is an excellent local person and has the energy and stamina required for the job. We need new energy and ideas. He has a real love for his home county.

We seem to be losing our premier citizens at an alarming rate. They have contributed so much to their communities during their lifetimes. Onile Smith of Loom passed away on Jan. 28. She was the second half of Smith’s Orchard and Fruit Market that provided fresh fruit and vegetables to our local communities and beyond. Our hearts reach out to her family and friends in love and sympathy. Nancy Mowrey Wolfe of Delray died on Jan. 26. She was much loved by her family, friends and community.

Snow storms and freezing temperatures have a way of slowing the world down and bringing our basic needs to the front. Food, water, medications, and a warm Place to shelter are at the top of my list. If I have these four items I am fortunate indeed and thank my God for providing for my needs. Companionship, new reading material and yarn are extras I enjoy when spending a lot of time indoors. Electronic gadgets are not high on my list.

We are in the final days of December and 2024 is quickly coming to a close. The Christmas Eve Service at Capon Chapel was well attended and a wonderful service was presented by the Rev. Karen Tate. Our next service was a service held at North River Mills on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2024 at 10 a.m.We had an unpleasant surprise on Christmas morning. My grandkids and son should have enjoyed an early breakfast at my house prior to a big meal at Joyce’s home later in the day.

The Light Up Capon Bridge Celebration held last weekend was a big hit with everyone except the folks traveling on Rt. 50 at the time of the parade. Local citizens enjoyed the opportunity to strut our stuff and show off our town. I think we need to slow up and savor every moment of the holiday season. We can get caught up in the hustle and bustle without remembering just what it is all about.

We have much to be thankful for in our family. We gathered at my sister Joyce’s house to enjoy a great Thanksgiving meal. We feasted on turkey and all the trimmings along with country ham and varied side dishes. Homemade pies, cookies and a salted caramel cheesecake rounded out the dessert table. Those present were Carol Fultz, Joyce Oates, Rick Ark, Julie and Amanda Greene, Adam Hiett, Robert Frazier, Rachael Hiett, Gerald Hiett, Brenda Hiett and Gary Hahn. Today, Dec.

Our Capon Bridge needlework group met at the fire hall pavilion to set up and decorate our “Merry Hatter’s Tree” for the Light Up Capon Bridge Christmas Tree Pavilion for the coming Christmas season. We had a great time and many members joined in to make it our best tree ever. We use our hats to decorate and add lights and other handmade items. Under the tree is a large tote filled with varying sizes and colors of warm hats for the winter season. They are for anyone who needs a hat.

We are into the eleventh month of 2024 and it will be a momentous one. Yesterday every citizen will have had a chance to vote for a new leader. I took advantage of the early voting opportunity to get the job done at my convenience. The polling place location was the former Capon Bridge High School. I never miss a chance to view our class photos in the hallway. It was quick and informative and I was done. On my way in I was greeted by a lovely, white-haired lady in a wheelchair.
