In the 1940s and early 1950s, the good old days in the godless Communist Soviet Union, a scientific theory called Lysenkoism flourished. The term comes from Trofim Lysenko, an agronomist who rejected the theories of Mendelian genetics and natural selection. He believed that plants developed over time not through genetics, but through Lamarckism, the theory of the inheritance of acquired characteristics.

Whole milk could return as an option in school cafeterias, according to a bill supported by Sen. Jim Justice. The Republican Senator from West Virginia signed on as co-sponsor of the “Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act of 2025.”“I am proud to be a co-sponsor of this bill [and] glad to see it pass out of committee! These hills and hollows are full of smart people — they’re sensible and practical minded, too. Most are more comfortable chatting in the garden, under the hood of an old pickup, over a parts counter or a pile of mortar and stone — while painting or sculpting or on a parked tractor or picking ladder. Perhaps conversing on a front porch during a break from banjo, guitar or fiddle. That’s the kind of folks that West Virginia produces and attracts — and I’m happy with that.

The Capon Chapel Memorial service was held on Sunday, May 25. The attendance was light but folks were generous with their contributions. Funds collected were set aside for the mowing  and maintenance of the  cemetery. It was a sunny but cool day and the flags on our veterans’ graves looked patriotic fluttering on the breeze. We are grateful to the Capon Bridge American Legion Post for providing the flags and holders and for being there to make sure they were placed. Thank you.
