    The Institute for Local Self-Reliance’s (ILSR) Composting for Community team has more than a decade of history actively working with state and local officials, legislators, and advocacy groups in Maryland to advance favorable composting policy in the state. Our vision for Maryland is to develop a healthy, diverse, and distributed composting infrastructure that encompasses composting in an array of locations including schools, community gardens, businesses, urban and rural farms, and at home.

    Composting equipment is typically not readily available in sizes that community sites can use. This is true for turning and mixing systems as well as compost trommel screeners and sifters. “Necessity is the mother of invention.” In this age of open-source collaboration, it is encouraging to note that there is an entire online community of folks in various countries sharing trommel screen designs.
