    On October 25th, 2024, ILSR participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Composting Education Hub (CEH) at the Agricultural History Farm Park in Montgomery County, Maryland. The CEH is the first county site dedicated to training both residents and farmers about food scrap composting, and demonstrating how to recycle nutrients to create high quality compost for local use.

    The Institute for Local Self-Reliance’s (ILSR) Composting for Community team has more than a decade of history actively working with state and local officials, legislators, and advocacy groups in Maryland to advance favorable composting policy in the state. Our vision for Maryland is to develop a healthy, diverse, and distributed composting infrastructure that encompasses composting in an array of locations including schools, community gardens, businesses, urban and rural farms, and at home.

    BenefitsComposting is an age-old practice that is intrinsically tied to food production and consumption. Farmers who have intimate knowledge of their soils and want access to high-quality compost are ideal stewards of the composting process. Farms often have equipment that can be repurposed for composting, may be able to produce compost less expensively than purchasing it, and can tailor their composting recipes for their specific soil and crop needs.

    On Tuesday, February 6th from 1:00 – 4:30 p.m., ILSR will host a pre-conference workshop, Community Composting Systems: New Projects and Scaling Up Existing Projects, as part of the US Composting Council’s 2024 Conference and Tradeshow in Daytona Beach, FL. The workshop will cover composting systems for farm and community settings from DIY solar-powered systems to branded ASP systems. Small- to medium-sized equipment providers will guest speak.

    ILSR developed these Composting Learning Activities under its Neighborhood Soil Rebuilders Composter Training Program to assist community composting sites in training their own community participants. These Learning Activities provide a hands-on complement to our Community Composting 101 Online Certificate Course, which prepares participants to establish and manage composting projects that both engage and serve their communities.
