Donna Kearney, the executive director of Hospice Muskoka, was before Gravenhurst council at its committee of the whole meeting on April 15 to discuss the program’s anticipated growth in the coming years. She had made previous presentation to the District of Muskoka and Town of Bracebridge and was scheduled to meet with Muskoka Lakes council on April 16.

Statistics are showing a large number of Ontario residents plan to vacation close to home this year. And the federal government should make it easier for them to do so, says one tourism official. According to a report released April 4 by Destination Ontario, an agency of the Government of Ontario’s Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Gaming, nine of 10 Ontario residents surveyed indicate they plan to vacation in the province over next 12 months, with Muskoka a highly ranked destination of choice.

A representative from a Muskoka group concerned with the region’s environment is applauding a District of Muskoka move to tackle the ongoing issue of road salt in area lakes. Jim Davis, who is a director with the Gull and Silver Lakes Residents’ Association, is praising the district council’s passing of a resolution on March 17, which commits its ongoing efforts toward the reduction of road salt as much as possible, while maintaining safety on roads and sidewalks.

After moving up to the Muskoka region four years ago from the Toronto region, he put his experience working for his family’s sewing business to good use, networking with area businesses to let people know he was offering his services as a sewing machine repair expert. “It started out of my house, and I got great word of mouth, and that’s kind of how I built a following here,” he said.
