A Toronto man charged with arson says he will plead guilty and then appeal a judge’s decision to not stay the charges, claiming his right to a speedy trial was compromised. Andrew Hill, who is facing charges of arson and break and enter from two incidents nearly three years ago, is set to be back in court June 2 to set a trial date. He was charged in connection with a structure fire that destroyed a Hamilton Point Road cottage in Bracebridge on June 22, 2022.

The Len O’Connor era at the Muskoka Airport has reached its final destination. The District of Muskoka announced on May 2 that the airport chief executive officer will retire effective May 23. O’Connor became the airport’s first CEO in 2019. This position replaced the airport manager role that was held for 12 years by Mark Stirling, who retired in December 2018. O’Connor had worked as airport manager and progressed to the role of CEO for the Niagara District Airport prior to coming to Muskoka.

The Bracebridge business community is growing by one. The Town of Bracebridge and SmartCentres real estate development company have confirmed Winners will be opening a store near the Walmart location. “A building permit has been issued, and construction is expected to begin shortly on a new building in the SmartCentres development, which will be the future home of Winners,” said Jennifer Clancy, the town’s manager of economic development.

It appears the Gravenhurst Farmers Market will be calling Gull Lake Rotary Park home from now on. Heather Hay, who is the market’s secretary, says the board and the Town of Gravenhurst are negotiating a lease for the park. “We haven’t signed our new lease, but it’s in preparation,” she said during an April 30 interview.

There is a group of south Muskoka residents looking forward to this summer, but not for its warmer weather and sunny skies. Officials with the Gravenhurst Health Hub are hoping, that by at least late June, they will hear from the Town of Gravenhurst, the District of Muskoka and the Ministry of Health how much, if any, funding the group can receive toward its $1.75-million project costs.
