That’s one of the options presented in a report going to the finance and corporate services committee on Monday. While staff found that charging a fee would recoup rising postage and printing costs, they’re recommending an approach focused on promoting electronic billing instead. The city estimates that about half of its residents and customers are enrolled in e-billing.

    Plans for a new Rockway Centre would make it Kitchener’s largest community centre. Staff are recommending the city issue a request for proposals from a development partner that would construct a new mixed-use building including a centre for older adults within 1.5 kilometres of the existing centre on King Street East, near Sheldon Avenue. A report will be presented to councillors at Monday’s community and infrastructure services committee meeting.

    Vive Development is planning to build five rental towers on a Kitchener property purchased out of receivership. The company acquired the vacant site for $22.75 million after a previous project planned by a different developer for the property at Courtland Avenue East and Block Line Road went into receivership last year. “It’s a parcel that we’ve been keenly interested in for probably well over a decade,” said Stephen Litt, Vive’s chief development officer.

    Important work to address intimate partner violence will continue with the resumption of a legislative subcommittee, Kitchener South—Hespeler MPP Jess Dixon says. Last year, Dixon and NDP MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam were named co-leads on the justice policy subcommittee on intimate partner violence, which heard testimony from more than 150 people and organizations, including survivors, community agencies and police services, before an early provincial election call halted the work.

    A developer is proposing to build a rental building with affordable studio units in Kitchener’s Centreville-Chicopee neighbourhood. Eleven Housing Corporation wants to construct the three-storey, 26-unit building on the property at 132 Fairway Rd. N., at the corner of Jansen Avenue. The site currently contains a single-detached home that would be torn down.
