Environmental product declarations are becoming an industry standard for driving down embodied carbon in the built environment. Embodied carbon refers to the amount of greenhouse gas emissions associated with upstream—extraction, production, transport and manufacturing—stages of a product’s life. Tools like EPDs are important for reducing the significant problem of climate-damaging embodied carbon in the built environment.

In the pursuit of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, the significance of decarbonizing the built environment cannot be overstated. With nearly 80% of buildings in 2050 already standing today, retrofitting existing structures has emerged as a pivotal lever on the pathway to net zero emissions. Recent findings from a new study underscore both the progress and the pressing need for expedited action in this domain.

A new study revealed that U.S. emissions from the built environment have increased by 3% in the last decade - a trend that looks set to continue. Research by 3Keel and Kingspan found that reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from buildings are reversing in the U.S. According to the report, the nation’s building stock is “far off track for reaching net zero by 2050, and without major intervention is unlikely to align with such a trajectory in the coming years”.
