A large weather system high up in the atmosphere will influence our weather for the rest of this week, keeping things unsettled across the region. Expect a mostly cloudy day Thursday, which will help keep temperatures close to normal for late May. In the afternoon, scattered showers and storms could pop-up, especially near the Blue Ridge. If you’re out and about, it wouldn’t hurt to keep an umbrella handy.

Friday & Saturday: Cool, dry, and breezy, ideal for outdoor plans. Sunday: Increasing clouds with a chance for late-day showers. Memorial Day: Scattered showers likely, but not a total washout. Warmer. Cooler, drier air will settle in. Gusty northwest winds will linger once again, especially across higher elevations along and west of the Blue Ridge. While temperatures will top out in the 60s and low 70s, the breeze will make it feel even cooler.

(WDBJ/Gray News) – Part of the United States could see the Northern Lights on Friday. A severe storm could trigger colorful auroras as far south as Alabama. The Space Weather Prediction Center says at least five coronal mass ejections have been directed toward Earth. These explosions of plasma and magnetic fields from the sun’s corona create the storm. The coronal mass ejections were observed heading toward Earth and are expected to combine and slam into the Earth’s atmosphere sometime Friday.
