ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - At the end of the month, Pedro Szalay will step down as the Artistic Director of the Southwest Virginia Ballet and move with his husband to Scotland. But don’t say he’s leaving the Roanoke Valley or the Ballet behind. We caught up with Szalay and the company of young dancers in April, as they held one of their final rehearsals before his final performance with the organization. The interaction with his students, Szalay told us, is the “essence” of his work here.

COVINGTON, Va. (WDBJ) - For three decades, the Alleghany Highlands Arts Council and its partners have brought the Missoula Children’s Theatre to western Virginia. The week-long residency gives local kids a chance to perform in a full-scale musical, and for many, it’s become a popular tradition and a family affair. This year, the colorful production was a crowd pleaser. And the choice of Alice in Wonderland was a throwback to the very first visit of the Missoula Children’s Theatre in 1995.

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - In the decades before the American Revolution, Rockbridge County was on the Virginia frontier. British subjects who settled there faced hardship and the threat of violent conflict. Today, volunteers are opening a window on that era, as they work to restore a cemetery in the community of Kerr’s Creek. On a Saturday morning in late March, volunteers were probing the ground and scraping away layers of dirt in the McKee/Big Spring Cemetery.

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Gene McPherson disappeared on May 23, 1987. And his son Paul McPherson says the hurt hasn’t faded over time. “My wife woke me up the other morning and asked me what was wrong, McPherson told WDBJ7. “Out of deep sleep and I told her I was looking for dad. And so you never get over that part of it.”Gene McPherson’s pickup was found a few days after his disappearance, abandoned at a rest area on Interstate 81 in Montgomery County.
