A longtime economic development leader is running for the Iowa 4th congressional district position, as Chris McGowan made that announcement Wednesday morning. McGowan is a Republican from Sioux City who has been President of the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce for two decades. McGowan was joined by many family members in his announcement event. He said he has the background to perform well as a congressman for Northwest Iowans, by virtue of his knowledge of businesses and agriculture.

After three years as president of Morningside University in Sioux City, Albert Mosley is departing to lead another college in Florida. Mosley’s departure and next position as president of Bethune-Cookman University were announced on the websites of both colleges. He will be the eighth president at Bethune-Cookman beginning on July 7, and college officials say he is a visionary leader who aids student success.

Siouxlanders are having to navigate three days of severe heat through Sunday, when the high temperatures could reach 100-plus degrees every day. There is an Extreme Heat Warning from the National Weather Service through 11 p.m. Sunday for all three Siouxland states. As the Lewis Pool in the Morningside area of Sioux City opened at 1 p.m. Friday after the adult lap swim, more than 20 young people were waiting at the entrance. At that time, the heat index in Sioux City had hit 101 degrees.

This past weekend Sweet Grass Uprising and Siouxlands Good Trouble Makers organized a United We Stand rally in South Sioux City and Sioux City. Organizers estimated about 900 people had attended and walked from South Sioux City to Sioux City across the Veterans Memorial Bridge. Organizers handed out booklets of the US Constitution. Participants made four stops along the protest route. With each stop there were prayers and readings of the Constitution.

Morningside University officials are looking into building a new stadium on the east edge of Sioux City that could be used for the Mustangs’ college baseball games. The Woodbury County Planning and Zoning Commission is reviewing a proposal that could be built near the intersection of Buchanan Avenue and Old Highway 141. Woodbury County Board of Supervisors member Kent Carper told Siouxland Public Media News the proposal was first reviewed by the commission on May 29.
