But it’s very important to think theologically about mission for a number of reasons, actually. Thinking theologically about mission helps us define mission the way God does. There are many definitions of missions, and some of them are less biblical than others.

United with Christ in PriesthoodThe priesthood of all believers is a beautiful doctrine that was revived by the Reformers. Basically, it says that Christ is our priest and that all believers in Christ are priests, in some sense, like Christ. Not just a certain special class of people in the church, but all believers share in this priesthood as we share in Christ and as we participate with Christ in a spiritual union. That’s the beautiful doctrine that we find in Scripture.

Christian witness is the church commissioned by Christ, sent out, empowered by the Holy Spirit to speak about what God is doing. Witnessing is to speak of Christ and his gospel truth, salvation in Christ alone, to speak about God—the only true God—and his truth claims in Scripture, and to speak to sinners and to bring the gospel to them in various ways. That’s a Christian witness: participating in God’s mission. I think we often confuse these two areas—both important areas.
