The Great CommissionWhat is mission? Many Christians answer this question by turning to Jesus’s familiar words in Matthew 28:19: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations . . .” Known as the Great Commission, these words are essential for understanding the mission of the church in the world. Fifty years ago this week, the Palais de Beaulieu in Lausanne, Switzerland, hosted the First International Congress on World Evangelization (known as Lausanne 1, or Lausanne ’74), a gathering Time referred to as “a formidable forum, possibly the widest-ranging meeting of Christians ever held.” Specifically, over 2,300 Christian leaders from 150 countries gathered around the theme “Let the Earth Hear His Voice.”The call to convene came from key leaders including Billy Graham and John Stott.

Jesus’s mission, according to John’s prologue, is to reveal God the Father. John 1:18 seems to imply that humanity needs the incarnation, not only to make possible the sacrifice of the Lamb of God but more fundamentally because humanity needs to see the Father: “No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.” How can humanity come to the invisible God?
