Everything was lining up right again for the Calhoun girls’ track and field team this spring. They extended their meet winning streak to 113 en route to an eighth straight conference championship and was one event away from successfully defending their county title, but a rival school swooped in and stole it away.

The final event literally vaulted the Hewlett girls’ spring track and field team to the Nassau Class AA county title. Junior Maree Drayling won the deciding pole vault and senior Jayden Yochai and sophomore Ella Findling finished second and fifth, respectively, as the Bulldogs collected 20 points in the event to ‘vault’ over four schools and claim the program’s tenth county title and first since 2018 on May 19.

Two years ago, the Hewlett softball team won just one game in 17 tries while wondering if there was a light at the end of the tunnel. Now, it is conference champion with a young nucleus already in place for possibly more titles. The Bulldogs went 15-2 during the regular season, won their first conference title since 2018, and playoff game in seven years under first-year manager and Conference IX Coach of the Year Jonathon Welsh.

Winning the Conference 2B title wasn’t easy for the Kennedy boys’ tennis team as it needed to beat two other contenders late in the season in order to reclaim its throne. And the Cougars did it by the slimmest of margins thanks to some late heroics. Kennedy beat Hewlett and Baldwin by identical 4-3 scores in a span of five days and finished the regular season 13-1 to capture its second 2B title in three years while denying Baldwin a third straight title.

For the past five years, the Valley Stream Central baseball team has been in and out of the Nassau Countywide Conference, a developmental league that doesn’t have a playoff berth. The Eagles won it in 2021 and finished third there two years later, but that success has yet to carry into the upper leagues. This season is arguably the team’s best-ever in the division as the Eagles sit 14-0-1 to move within a win of another title entering the final week of action.

The Hewlett boys’ tennis team has shown marked improvement under new coach Gail Weintraub and were in contention for a conference title for most of the season before a slight skid against the top two teams all but eliminated that chance. The playoffs are still a possibility with one match left, which would be icing on the cake following a five-win showing last spring.

Calhoun is in a four-team race for the Conference II girls’ lacrosse championship entering the final two weeks of the regular season. Last year’s county semifinalists are 7-1 against conference foes this spring and 9-2 overall. Unfortunately, their lone divisional loss came against first-place Plainedge (9-1 Conference II) on April 15, but the girls rebounded to win their next three games by a combined score of 45-13 to remain in the hunt.
