    May 17—Norman is desegregated, but not integrated, according to a retired professor from the University of Oklahoma and longtime Norman resident. George Henderson has been recognized by the university and other members of the community as the first African-American to purchase land in Norman, which he did after accepting a job as a faculty member. Before his retirement, he rose to dean of the College of Liberal Studies, and the Henderson Scholars Program is named after him.

Natural Grocers workers voted 11-9 to join United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 1000, a nonprofit that negotiates contracts on behalf of small businesses. Joe Lee, UFCW Local 1000 organizer, said the union will pull a handful of employees to negotiate terms.

    May 9—Norman Public Schools celebrated the fifth anniversary of its partnership with Grace International, which culminated in the creation of the Intergenerational Pre-Kindergarten Program at Grace Living Center. The program, which first welcomed students in 2019, brings pre-K students to a senior living home where those living in the facility complement traditional pre-K instruction.

    May 8—Former employees of Natural Grocers and community members picketed the Norman location in solidarity with current employees who want to unionize. Current and past employees are complaining that the chain has failed to meet the needs of its workers by offering subpar health care and failing to protect the rights of pregnant women and new mothers, among other things. Willow McCartney, who left the chain last month, said she was ousted from the company permanently.
